The Sticky Campus

Getting students to engage at a commuter school is particularly challenging. Students are too easily tempted to park, go to class and drive back home. How do you make a campus sticky? Give me some ideas.

Having a campus cafeteria with a more robust selection will help some. Also, we need to provide more space for services such as tutoring, which keeps students productively engaged in their learning. Again, new building capacity should help here, too. Finally, keep up the great work in the area of extra-curricular opportunites, such as clubs and events.

Mark—I like your comment about food. I can’t wait for the new café to open inside the Crafton Center. I am hoping it meets the kind of standard you are referencing in your post.

There need to be more events on campus. When I was a student there were the Pow Wows and battle of the band events that were put together by the student senate. At Cal Poly Pomona, in front of the book store, there is always live music being played around noon. Unfortunately our campus has become a very anti event campus and don’t want things that might interfere with their classes or create more paperwork. Hopefully this will change with the college hour instituted.

Totally agree with this. I especially like your suggestion about live music. We are trying to put a flag in the ground on Wednesdays with bands coming to campus.

I vote for basketball hoops in the quad!
And, where can we put a few pool tables?

    • Reece, Bryan says:

I like this idea. Basketball hoops in the quad. Slack lines between the trees. Frisbees and footballs on the lawn.

I think this is a great idea. i was in the basketball class last fall and it was alot of fun but now that the class is gone all of the people that used to come and play have had to look else were to play the sport. i run into some f them and all we talk about is how great it was to be able to take a break from studying and just have some fun, i definitely second this idea!!

If crafton had a building similar to CSUSB where there is a food court and a sitting area to just lounge or study then I would stay all day. I have dairy allergies and pretty much all the food at Crafton I can’t eat. Even protein bars and chips have a dairy component . So I have to leave to go eat somewhere else.

Ughghghghghghgh. I totally agree with you. We have to get a fix to this. A big study area with access to clean food and good coffee = AWESOME.

What about the idea of have various groups adopt a college hour? We have about 70 college hours per semester and it is too hard for Student Activities to develop programming for every one of them. If we had a person/group/department/class adopt one college hour each semester, I think we might be able to sustain programing (and therefore stickiness) during college hour for the entire semester.

A gym that is open to all students, not just the kineseiology students and a beer garden!!!!! 🙂

More tables with umbrellas. It’s difficult to study in the sun. Love the battle of the bands idea and more whoesome food.

Would there be any chance of getting some franchised refreshments on campus? Subway and Starbucks would keep me here all day. The closest place for decent food at a decent price is far away. A bike path around campus for a little exercise between classes would be nice too. I know this is impossible, but an actual sports program would bring in spectators and participants.

    • Reece, Bryan says:

Working on the food—We need to fix this. We are also looking into athletics. The bike path is very interesting.

I would suggest more music in the quad. Also have clubs in one main area. It would be nice to have a mite music club if there isn’t one already.

  10. Celine says:

I agree Starbucks and subway !!!!! A Lounge area were we can be comfortable while studying!

  11. steph says:

definitely more events! add a little culture into it . different music games competitions idk. add a little more fun into that school. and have a good school sport or a couple different ones.

  12. steph says:

    college night on campus.

A couple little coffee carts around campus would be awesome. Maybe one in the quad. & Defenitly a wider selection of food. I wish we still had the BBQ, I heard the food use to be amazing.

This is killing me. The same theme is all over this blog. We must do this.

Crafton would definitely benefit from even more parking. I’ve been tempted to stay on campus between classes but end up going home because I think someone else needs the parking. I realize with construction it’s hard to do but I am so exited for the construction to be.

I’m a bit late jumping on this one, but It does appear that the people have spoken! 🙂 Essentially, my reading of the literature on creating engaged cultures focuses on creating human-scaled settings, and programming in gathering areas that encourage interaction. One gathering place that gets lots of traffic these days is found in the Cafeteria courtyard. There are at least 20-30 students sitting out there at any time pretty much all day long. I hear guitars, mandolins and I have not yet seen the detailed plans for the new student center, but I have seen the footprint of the building, and the “U” shape of the building appears to be facing away from the quad area … I sure hope that the plan doesn’t call for a cold facade of a building that faces the quad … we have too many unwelcoming elements on campus already …

  16. Gary Williams says:

I also like the suggestion of a bike/running path that circles the campus … 🙂
